Bluecube Technology Solutions will be supporting The Duke of Edinburgh's Award this
year in the Dartmoor Challenge 2008.
We hope to raise £2,500 for the charity by hiking, biking and sleeping rough
on Devon's Dartmoor National Park. The team should be well prepared for the sleeping
rough part! (Bluecube Bytenight 2007)
Taking place on 29th - 31st August 2008, Bluecube teams will undergo a series of
tough survival challenges with the goal to win against other teams also competing.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, commonly misjudged of only supporting the most privileged
in society, helps over a quarter of a million young people turn their lives around
each year. Young people who are particularly vulnerable benefit from the Award.
The impact of even a Bronze Award on a young person with special needs or a youngster
who has fallen foul of the law can often change the course of a life.
In an era where the media takes great pleasure in vilifying young people, The Duke
of Edinburgh's Award sets the record straight by allowing young people all across
the UK to write their own amazing stories.
A young man recently told his story at a Gold Award Presentation. For him, his experience
with the Award began in a Belfast prison, where the temptation of lapsing into a
pattern of re-offending would have been strong. The Award was there for him upon
release, and he has recently completed his Gold Award and turned his life around.
The same life-changing effect can be seen in Spencer, a young man restricted to
a wheelchair following a traumatic brain injury. "After an accident at 15, I thought
it would be the end of any future attainments, but the Award gave me my first opportunity
to be independent, to be motivated and to enjoy a social life. After completing
my Gold Award, I felt I could have a life and not just watch others".
